Cambodia Gambling Halls
There is an appealing story to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where gambling hall gaming is illegal. Eight gambling halls are situated in a relatively small area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling dens is in a perfect destination, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two most popular betting locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the gambling dens ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few limitations constraints for casino ownership. Ownership is required to be mainly Thai; however, funding sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and although visas are supposedly required to cross, there are methods around this, as is true of many borders.
The first Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just a single gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a docked bateau gambling hall, highlights one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. There are one hundred and fifty slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred one armed bandits and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slots and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with 135 slot machines and sixty six of the normal table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the 8 casinos in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive resort and hotel complex that features numerous conveniences aside from the casino, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slot machines and eighty eight table games.
