Cambodia Gambling Dens

[ English ]

There is an appealing history to the Cambodia gambling halls that sit just across the border from neighboring Thailand, in which gambling hall wagering is prohibited. Eight gambling dens are situated in a generally tiny location in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime spot, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a thriving business with Thai workers and travelers from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of controls requirements for gambling den ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mostly Thai; still, funding sources are cryptic. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to cross, there are means around this, as is real of many borders.

The initial Cambodia gambling halls opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving just 1 gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a stationary ship casino, contains 150 slot machines and sixty tables. The Naga casino never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of 21, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and one each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The first gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly opened. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights three hundred slot machine games and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most dominant game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, also a part of a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and 97 casino games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel building that features many amenities accompanying the gambling den, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 slot machine games and 88 gaming tables.
